When Earth Day is and Why We Celebrate It

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, serves to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote the protection of natural resources. Initiated in 1970 to combat pollution, it is now a global movement for climate action, sustainability, and biodiversity, mobilizing millions to act against climate change, pollution, and deforestation.

As we approach April 22, 2026, the urgency to protect our planet has never been greater. At Taman Safari Bali, we don’t just see this as a date on the calendar, but as a core mission that guides our daily efforts in wildlife preservation and environmental education.

Key Reasons We Celebrate Earth Day

Understanding the “why” behind this global event is crucial for moving from awareness to action. There are four fundamental pillars that define why this movement remains relevant today:

1. Environmental Protection Awareness

Earth Day acts as a global megaphone. It highlights urgent crises like climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. In a world where habitats are shrinking, this day reminds us that the survival of species, from the majestic Sumatran Tiger to the delicate Bali Starling, depends on the health of our air, water, and soil.

2. Actionable Sustainability

Beyond marches and speeches, the movement encourages individuals to adopt sustainable practices. This includes reducing waste, opting for renewable energy, and supporting businesses that prioritize the planet. For us at the safari, this means implementing zero-waste protocols and educating every visitor on how they can be a “Conservation Hero” in their own backyard.

3. Political Action & Legacy

The history of Earth Day is rooted in activism. Established by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, it aims to influence environmental policies. This legacy led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and landmark legislation like the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. Today, it continues to push governments worldwide to honor their climate commitments.

4. Community Mobilization

Earth Day provides a platform for local, national, and global action to restore habitats and conserve resources. It is the one day when the entire world speaks the same language: the language of restoration. At Taman Safari Bali, we use this momentum to strengthen our ties with local communities and conservationists.

A Deep Dive into the History of Earth Day

To appreciate where we are going, we must look back at the history of Earth Day. In the late 1960s, the world was beginning to wake up to the cost of industrial progress. Rachel Carson’s 1962 bestseller Silent Spring had already set the stage by exposing the deadly effects of pesticides on the environment.

However, it was Senator Gaylord Nelson who provided the spark. After witnessing the devastation of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969, he realized that if he could harness the energy of the anti-war protest movement with a public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.

Why April 22nd?

Many people ask why this specific date was chosen. Senator Nelson and his team, including activist Denis Hayes, chose April 22nd because it fell between college spring break and final exams. The goal was to maximize student participation, as the youth have always been the engine of environmental change. That first Earth Day in 1970 saw 20 million Americans, 10% of the population at the time, taking to the streets.

2026 Theme: “Our Power, Our Planet”

Every year, the Earth Day Network sets a specific focus. For 2026, the theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” This theme focuses on:

  • Accelerating Clean Energy: Transitioning away from fossil fuels to protect the climate.
  • Increasing Accountability: Holding corporations and governments responsible for environmental damage.
  • Promoting Local Action: Empowering local communities to lead the way in habitat restoration.

At Taman Safari Bali, we align with this theme by showcasing how “Our Power” as a conservation institution can drive real change for the “Planet.” From our solar-powered facilities to our water recycling systems, we demonstrate that modern tourism can—and must—be sustainable.

As a leading institution for conservation, Taman Safari Bali (part of the Taman Safari Indonesia Group) plays a pivotal role in protecting Indonesia’s rich biodiversity. Earth Day is the perfect time to highlight the work that happens behind the scenes every day of the year.

Our park is home to over 400 animals, many of which are part of critical breeding programs. Conservation is not just about keeping animals in a safe environment; it’s about ensuring their survival in the wild. Our efforts include:

  • Species Recovery: Working tirelessly to increase the population of endangered species.
  • Habitat Restoration: Supporting reforestation projects across Indonesia to ensure released animals have a home to return to.
  • Education: Welcoming thousands of students annually to learn about the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

By visiting Taman Safari Bali, guests aren’t just seeing animals; they are directly funding these vital programs. A portion of every ticket goes toward the medical care, nutrition, and rehabilitation of species that would otherwise face extinction.

Creative Collaboration with The Bali Life Foundation

Earth Day is also about the people who will inherit the earth. This year, Taman Safari Bali is proud to continue its meaningful collaboration with The Bali Life Foundation (also known as the Bukit Hidup Foundation).

The Bali Life Foundation is a social welfare institution that provides a safe haven for orphans and victims of abuse. With their motto “Hope, Dignity, Purpose,” they provide education and a future for 47 children. We believe that environmental education is a key part of that “Purpose.”

The “Seeds of Hope” Artwork

In our most recent Earth Day celebration, the children from Bali Life Foundation participated in a unique “hands-on” conservation project. Together with our rangers, they created a massive piece of artwork representing the Earth. Instead of using traditional paint, the children used:

  1. Recycled Materials: Collected from within the park to form the base of the art.
  2. Plant Seeds: Carefully glued onto the canvas to represent the green continents.

The idea is that once the celebration is over, parts of the artwork can actually be planted, allowing the “art” to grow into real trees and flowers. This activity teaches children that their actions, no matter how small, can literally seed the future of our planet. It was a powerful moment of seeing conservation and community spirit collide.

What Can You Do This Earth Day?

The impact of Earth Day has grown into the world’s largest non-religious observance, recognized in over 190 countries. But the real change happens in our daily choices. Here is how you can contribute:

Action Impact
Visit Taman Safari Bali Support world-class wildlife breeding and habitat protection.
Reduce Single-Use Plastics Protect our oceans and marine life from the “plastic soup” crisis.
Educate the Youth Share the history of Earth Day with your children to inspire the next generation.
Support Local NGOs Donate to organizations like the Bali Life Foundation that empower the community.

Conclusion: A Daily Commitment

While we answer the question “When is Earth Day?” with April 22nd, the truth is that for us at Taman Safari Bali, every day is Earth Day. Whether we are treating a rescued animal, composting organic waste from our restaurants, or teaching a child about the importance of trees, our commitment to the planet is unwavering.
